When we think about email servers, it’s easiest to think of them as coming in two, basic flavors – Standard-Use and High-Speed. But, what is the right tool for Email Broadcasting?
Standard-Use Email Servers
Most email is sent via servers that cater to the individual messages, different subject lines, and to a limited number of recipients. Now, we all know that we can feed multiple recipients off from a blind carbon copy (Bcc) messages, but even that is limited.
However, standard email services do put a governor on the email speed throttle. This came into play when Malware started to raid people’s email address books quietly, posting copious amounts of Spam messages to those members contained in the file. To thwart this action, the big players in the email world put sending limits on accounts.
For example, Google’s Gmail has a send limit of no more 100 recipients per message sent via SMTP (by POP or IMAP users). That includes addresses in the To, Cc, and Bcc fields of a single email.
So How Do High-Speed Servers Pull Off Their Magic?
The short answer is both negotiations and reputation. Organizations that possess the ability and capacity to send out thousands of email messages to unique addresses per minute not only have specialized equipment to carry out the task but they work in close collaboration with Internet backbone organizations.
This means that broadcast service companies must tirelessly maintain their whitelisted standard with groups such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, Comcast, AOL, and Verizon to name a few. This helps explain the premium pricing that often accompanies tapping into the use of a broadcast server.
